Snowmaking Calculations
To assist with designing snowmaking systems and equipment, we often use several equations that give the information we need. We have provided these calculators as a free resource for home snowmakers to assist with designing their setups. We hope you find these useful, and please let us know if there are others you would like to see added!
Nozzle Calculator
Calculates required total nozzle number from water pump flow (gpm) and desired water pressure (psi)
This calculation rounds the required nozzle number to the nearest whole number. If maximum pressure of the water pump is a concern, double check with the pressure calculator. To determine nozzle selection based on this calculation, select nozzles so that the total nozzle number adds up to this value. For example, if the required nozzle number is 5, and you are using two nozzles, use a #3 and a #2 nozzle.
Pressure Calculator
Calculates expected snowgun pressure based on total nozzle number and water flow (gpm)
This calculation determines the expected snowgun pressure based on total nozzle number and water flow rate. To determine the total nozzle number, add up the capacity sizes of all bulk water nozzles used. Due to pressure losses in long lengths of hose, this will be most accurate if the pressure reading is taken at the water pump.
Additional Resources
Listed below are additional calculators on other websites that may be useful for equipment design.
- Air flow rate through an orifice – useful for nucleation nozzle sizing and internal snow gun parts
- Water flow rate through an orifice – helpful for determining max water flow through a small opening
- Pulley and belt length calculator – can help you select the right pulleys and belts for a custom water pump or compressor setup
